Thursday 15th October 2009

England's World Cup qualifying campaign ended well last night with a 3-0 victory at home to Belarus. Now Fabio Capello has to decide who he will take to South Africa next summer. Here's who I would take:

Goalkeepers- Robert Green, Paul Robinson, David James.

Defenders- Glen Johnson, Wes Brown, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Matthew Upson, Joleon Lescott, Ashley Cole, Wayne Bridge.

Midfielders- Aaron Lennon, Theo Walcott, David Beckham, Frank Lampard, Gareth Barry, Steven Gerrard, Joe Cole.

Strikers- Wayne Rooney, Jermaine Defoe, Peter Crouch, Carton Cole, Darren Bent

Obviously there's still time for all this to change and a drop in form for the likes of Carlton Cole or Darren Bent may give Michael Owen or Emile Heskey a chance to get into the squad. Joe Cole hasn't played many games for Chelsea recently, but I think he'll get some more match time in the next few months and seal a place at the last minute. Wes Brown may seem an odd choice, but I couldn't think of anyone else to cover Glen Johnson at right back.

Unfortunately I'm a bit pressed for time at the moment, so haven't been able to justify my inclusion of every player, but if anyone strongly disagrees with my selection choices then please comment below and we can engage in debate!

No Heskey? Controversial. The man's an appalling striker but somehow he does wonders for Rooney and I'd take him instead of Darren Bent, who hasn't really shown that he can cut it at a level higher than Sunderland or Charlton. Enough said.

That's a fair point, Heskey does seem to get the best out of Rooney, but I wonder if Carlton Cole could do Heskey's job of holding up play as well as being more of a goalscoring threat?
According to soccerbase, Heskey's only started one league game for Aston Villa this season, so it will be difficult for him to get into the world cup squad when he isn't playing many games for his club.
As for Darren Bent, he's in great form at the moment, top English goal scorer in the league, I like to select players who are in form rather than big names.

How abt Foster,Carrick,Owen. Like Brown, they are may be odd choices but I think , they should have places in squad. Owen may be in the same situation like Walcott in 2006. Heskey and Crouch also deserve.. Unfortunately, what a shame for Foster. One year ago, he is widely supposed to be the 1st choices.

I was torn between James and Foster, but went for experience, Green would be my number one any way.
Carrick would be my back up for the 23 man squad if Gerrard, Lampard or Barry got injured. I also thought about including Shaun Wright-Phillips, but he's behind Walcott, Lennon and Beckham in the pecking order.
Owen could make it into the squad if he starts some more games for United and grabs some goals, England are quite spoilt for choice for strikers but I think they can only take a maximum of 5.
